The Medical Demography study in Brazil 2020 was released on December 9th, 2020, as a result of a Technical Cooperation Agreement between the Universidade de São Paulo (USP) and the Brazilian Federal Council of Medicine (CFM).
The survey, on the characteristics and evolution of the medical population in the country, has been conducted for ten years by Professor Mário Scheffer, who leads a research group on the subject with the Preventive Medicine Department of the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP).
In 2020, Brazil reached the milestone of half a million physicians. The publication updates demographic data, distribution, work and inclusion of physicians in the health system. In addition, it makes comparisons with countries and analyzes the profile of undergraduate students, and the expansion of courses in Medicine and Medical Residency in the country. The study also brings the count and profile of medical specialists in 55 recognized medical specialties, and details the medical demography in each Federation Unit.
