The Central Institute was entirely dedicated to the care of Coronavirus patients and has 200 ICU beds

The Hospital das Clínicas of the Medical School of the Universidade de São Paulo (HCFMUSP) held a war operation to release all 900 beds of the Central Institute exclusively to attend cases related to the Coronavirus. For that, the patients with other diseases were transferred for the other seven institutes of the complex. There are 200 ICU beds for COVID-19 patients. The number of ICUs can be expanded in at least a hundred more beds. The operation was arranged with the State of São Paulo governor, João Doria, the State Department of Health and the Coronavirus Contingency Committee.

With that, the Hospital das Clínicas has increased the capacity and the quality of attendance to the patients of the pandemic, in the biggest operation ever held in the history of the institution. At the same time, the patients with other problems, such as victims of strokes, heart attacks, cancer, among others, are more protected from the risk of contamination by staying in buildings without the patients of COVID-19. The same for the health professionals who attend on the other institutes.

For that, the HCFMUSP has begun, on March 24th, a transfer of about 400 patients who occupied beds at the Central Institute to the other units. It is a huge joint effort of the institution, which counts on the participation of Incor, Icesp, Inrad, IOT, IPq, ICr and Imrea. Therefore, the Central Institute building is entirely allocated for the treatment of coronavirus.

To that end, the HCFMUSP has increased its capacity to receive serious and moderately serious patients. All patients are referred by the State Department of Health. It is necessary to reinforce the guidance, so the population doesn’t directly seek the Hospital das Clínicas of FMUSP, a high complexity unit. People must look for, in necessary cases, the basic health unit closer to their homes. In case of necessity, they will be directed to the HCFMUSP.

“The HCFMUSP is placing into action its biggest operation in its history. We are doing everything to offer the largest possible number of beds to our population, at the same time looking to uphold, to the best of our capacities, the health of patients and collaborators”, states Tarcisio Eloy Pessoa de Barros Filho, Director of the Medical School of USP and president of the HCFMUSP Deliberative Board.

Since January 2020, the Hospital das Clínicas of FMUSP has placed in action its crisis committee to prepare for the arrival of serious patients who would need to be cared for on the ICUs of the hospital as a result of the new coronavirus. All actions are being done to assure the maximum quality on the assistance to the population in facing the pandemic.
