A study by a team from the Neuropsychiatry Program and Videoelectroencephalography Unit of the Institute of Psychiatry (IPq) of Hospital das Clínicas da FMUSP, coordinated by psychiatrists Renato Marchetti and José Gallucci-Neto, has just been published in the August, 2020 edition of the Vaccine, the highest quality science journal in all disciplines relevant to the field of vaccinology.
This is a study that investigated, in 2019, cases of adolescents patients sent to IPq by the Brazilian Ministry of Health and the State of Acre Health Secretary, from Rio Branco city, who had convulsive crises without a conclusive diagnosis, arising after HPV vaccination (papillomavirus). The IPq team investigated what would be the nature of these seizures. Of of the twelve selected patients, ten had a positive diagnosis for psychogenic non-epileptic seizure – PNES (functional disease of the nervous system associated with intense psychological and emotional stress) and two received the diagnosis of with idiopathic generalized epilepsy. No biological association was found between the HPV vaccine and the clinical problems presented by the patients. This study is a solid contribution to combat false ideas about the effects and effectiveness of vaccines, highlighting the importance of vaccination.
