The idea is that the award will be promoted annually, always on February 11, when the International Day of Women and Girls in Science is celebrated.

On March 15, 2021, the Secretariat of Economic Development and the Academy of Sciences of the State of São Paulo (ACIESP) launched the Ester Sabino Award for Women Scientists of the State of São Paulo. At the event, held in a virtual way, Professor Ester Sabino was honored. Ester, who names the award, and researcher Jaqueline Goes, who is part of the team coordinated by the Professor.

The aim of the award is to recognize the invaluable contribution of women scientists to the scientific, technological and economic development of the State of São Paulo. The idea is that the award will be promoted annually, always on February 11, when the International Day of Women and Girls in Science is celebrated.

The award is divided into two categories, one that celebrates senior scientists, with a consolidated career and major contributions to state science, and another that awards outstanding young researchers. Professor Ester Cerdeira Sabino, Associate of the Department of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases at the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP), is a physician, immunologist, former director of the Institute of Tropical Medicine at FMUSP and led the sequencing of the genome of the coronavirus. 

Professor Ester was already preparing to sequence the genome of the first strains of the Sars-Cov-2 virus even before he arrived in Brazil, leading a team of researchers from USP and the Adolfo Lutz Institute.
