At the autograph session held on April 3rd, Professor Paulo Saldiva, titular of the Pathology Department of FMUSP, has received friends, peers and admirers on his book release “Urban Life and Health: challenges of the inhabitants of the metropolis”. The event, held on the National Cultural Set, in São Paulo, counted on the presence of the director and vice-director of FMUSP, professors José Otavio Costa Auler Jr and Tarcisio Eloy Pessoa de Barros Filho.

Published by the Editora Contexto, the book brings the story of “a love case for São Paulo”, as defined by the author himself. It brings up analogies about the complex urban behavior and the human body, with reflections that join science and personal opinion on how the life of the citizen can be affected by the rhythm of the metropolis.

The cities not only bring opportunities, but also diseases, be it from the sanity conditions, pollution, violence, a frenetic rhythm, mosquito bites or other varieties which affect life quality. The text shows how the scenarios of illness are set. “How can the city and its evils affect us?” “How to have a good life quality in big cities?”, are some of the questions the author brings up in his reflections. “The content is aimed to all of those interested in the area, and not only doctors”, highlights the professor.

Paulo Hilário Nascimento Saldiva has as research and acting area the themes of Pulmonary Pathology and Environmental Pathology and Atmospheric Pollution. He develops science divulging activities as a member of the fixed panel of commentators for the Estadão radio and the Cultura Journal, from TV Cultura. He is currently the director of the Advanced Studies Institute (IEA) of USP and keeps a radio column at Radio USP, “Health and Environment” on Mondays, by 9h30.
